Has Netflix created a new way of doing movies?

In several months, Netflix has become a reference for “Big Watchers”. Since the death of Megavideo, it has been the first firm which has succeeded in lead the stream platform world. Thanks to the comfort of use (episodes go on by their own way, propositions of new movies and TV show classified by subject, etc), Netflix has conquered the heart of watchers.

This firm also proposes original productions like “Life is Strange”, “Exams”, “Narcos” or “Okja”. Those are pretty well realized and some like “Okja” are so well done that they were presented in Cannes festival.

But there we are: Can a movie, which has never known the darkness of a movie theatre, be elected?

In the one hand, the tradition wants that a movie was to be confronted to that public before being spotlighted on Cannes scene.

However, isn’t a barrier to creation? Should we include in the judgement its way of diffusion?

This is the new issues that must face the festival this year. Therefore, putting a movie of a TV show on a stream platform or download is touching many more people than putting it in theatre. The free access is a real gift for watchers and fans. And this is why some Netflix movies know more success than other theatre movies. It reaches a larger public.

Now, we can face the author’s rights argument. Where are they going to own their wages?
In fact, the traditional movie industry doesn’t pay much if not for famous creations like “Star Wars” or “Fast and Furious”. Many unknown movies doesn’t have what they deserve. And putting a paying access to see them is maybe not the more effective way to help them.

Actually, it is all the events around them which permits them to own money: ComiCon, goodies, figurines, posters, Tshirts, etc. All that makes fans happy to celebrate what they like. In that perspective, maybe it is wiser to put a free access for some movies and consider them like piece of art and not only Cash Cow.

So, those original creations should maybe be taken in account as pieces of art, like others, and be judged by what they expose and not only by the financing campaign they had had.

Let’s celebrate art and creation and forget about the rest!
